Evaluating the Dolphins Roster: Quarterback

Miami Dolphins v Arizona Cardinals

Some fans view the Dolphins roster as being “close” to a playoff team, while others see them in 8-8 limbo. I thought it would be a good idea to  look at each position and see if the Dolphins are close. What better way to start out with the quarterback, Ryan Tannehill?

After two years, Tannehill has shown enough to make me believe he could very well be the Dolphins franchise quarterback. In 2013 he threw for 24 touchdowns (doubling his total from his rookie year) and 17 interceptions. He out dueled quarterbacks like Tom Brady, Andrew Luck, Matt Ryan, and Ben Roethlisberger. This is all with a mediocre receiving core and being sacked a league high 58 times.

The argument is that Tannehill cannot throw a good deep ball. While it may not be the greatest, it isn’t as bad as some say. Russel Wilson was viewed as a great deep ball QB, but he threw the same amount of 40+ passes as Ryan Tannehill and only 3 more passes of 20+ yards. These numbers could easily be closer if Mike Wallace could catch with his hands instead of his body.  Tannehill’s receivers also dropped 33 balls in 2013, the tenth most in the NFL.

Ryan finished with a 16.4 PFF grade, which was 10th best in the NFL, ahead of Nick Foles, Cam Newton, and Tom Brady. Tannehill finished with a -0.4 PFF grade, this is the result of awful play calling. He was a wide receiver in college and could be a great threat to run the ball. Instead, he was in Mike Sherman’s vanilla, QB unfriendly offense.

While Tannehill still has A LOT of room to grow, I believe he is on the right track to becoming a good, if not great QB. The Dolphins have a few question marks on their team but quarterback is not one.
