Evaluating Joe Philbin

Joe Philben

Joe Philbin has been the Miami Dolphins coach for two years, I thought this would be a good time to look at how good the coach is doing.

So far, Joe Philbin is 15-17 after two season  and has yet to show anything to prove that he is a good coach.  He has proven he is awful at clock  management (the Panthers game) and cannot fire up a team.

Miami was absolutely awful at the beginning of each half, on both offense and defense. That falls right on the coach to fire up his team. Philbin loves to put on a fake voice and read off note cards, really? YOUR 53 man roster just beat the Patriots, you can’t think of a speech from your heart? That’s pathetic.

Philbin had a hard adjusting even when it was what would help the team succeed. He got to the point where he almost quit because he didn’t want to fire his long time friend Mike  Sherman for Miami’s poor offense. This is the guy who fell asleep at the combine and put together a very poor playbook. It makes you question if Joe Philbin actually puts the team first?

Philbin is also an awful media guy. While this isn’t a bad thing it does not help his reputation. The Dolphins haven’t been in the playoffs for 5 years, he should do all he can do be a favorite among the fans. When you start winning you can start being all “hush hush” like Bill Belichick.

A perfect example would be when Philbin was asked about Miami’s Go for Pass and Go-Go for run.  He said he didn’t believe the Dolphins were giving away his plays. Joe, I could tell what play the Dolphins were running from my coach, you don’t think opposing defenses could catch on?

The one thing I give Joe credit for was the Incognito/Martin saga. He let his players speak their mind. It helped to shed some light on what the Dolphins locker room was really like.

Overall Joe Philbin has done nothing to prove he can be a successful NFL coach. Just because a team isn’t successful doesn’t mean a coach isn’t. It could also be said the other way around, a team can make a coach look good, that is why Philbin was viewed as a coach of the year candidate after week 15.

Coach also had a hand in the removal of some very good players because of his personal feelings, i.e. chad and bush. etc.
