Dolphins hire Dennis Hickey to be next GM

The Dolphins search for a new GM finally came to an end this morning. After being denied by too many candidates the Dolphins settled on Dennis Hickey, Tampa’s director of player personnel. He spent 18 years working his way up the organization and was the director of player personnel for the last three years.

While we don’t ¬†know what Hickey will bring to the table, we do know the Dolphins missed out on some very solid candidates. Two tweets by NFL Networks Jeff Darlington explains the situation perfectly. “Dolphins had a nice piece of waterfront property on the market, but even people with waterfront property require proper Realtor to sell it.” Then he followed it up with “Nothing against Dennis Hickey, either. He is taking over a nice nucleus, a talented QB and a good salary cap. He might be fine. Total unknown.”

Darlington hit the nail on the head. The Dolphins have a lot of great pieces in place to put together a successful team. So why did the Dolphins have to settle on a dark horse candidate and get declined by so many solid GM choices? Is owner Stephen Ross’s system really that dysfunctional?

Again, this doesn’t mean Hickey will be bad, lets take a look at what happen in his three years as director of player personnel. His most well known pick would be Doug Martin, who gave the Bucs a very good running game before getting hurt half way through the 2013 campaign.

In 2013 only one player on defense drafted by Hickey had a positive grade on Pro Football Focus,  Linebacker Lavonte David who was drafted in the second round in 2012.

The Bucs offense and defensive lines are viewed as their strongest units, areas where the Dolphins do need some help. If he can establish a team that can dominate the trenches, Miami can be successful in 2014. While many fans aren’t sold on Hickey he does have some talent to work with, along with a solid cap number.
