Dolphins select OLB Jelani Jenkins and TE Dion Sims in fourth round

Dolphins continue to upgrade linebacker corps with Jenkins

The Miami Dolphins used their two fourth round picks on Florida outside linebacker Jelani Jenkins and Michigan St. tight end Dion Sims.

With the first pick, Jeff Ireland continued to remodel the linebacker corps, this time snagging arguably one of the top cover linebackers in the entire draft. Jenkins has some durability issues, but if he can stay healthy he should help upgrade the Dolphins’ nickel and dime packages, if not eventually challenge Koa Misi for a starting job.

With their second pick in the fourth round, the Dolphins turned their attention to the offense and the tight end position. After signing Dustin Keller in free agency, Miami was in need of a big blocking tight end. Dion Sims fits that mold. But Sims also can contribute in the passing game. He possesses a large frame and soft hands, although he is lacking in the quickness department.

Overall, though, two solid selections by Ireland with plenty of upside.

Jelani Jenkins, Outside Linebacker, Florida

Height: 6-0
Weight: 243
Bench: 27

Strengths: Very good speed for the position. Has ability to get from sideline to sideline. Good athleticism. Capable blitzer. One of the best coverage linebackers in the entire draft. Flexible hips. Locates and makes play of football

Weaknesses: Less than ideal size and length. Needs to get stronger. Has difficulty shedding blocks. Durability an issue.

Dion Sims, Tight End, Michigan State

Height: 6-5
Weight: 262
40: 4.75
Vert: 35
Bench: 22

Strengths: Huge frame. Soft, reliable hands. Once he gets going, picks up solid speed in the open field. Great footwork as a run and pass blocker. High upside as a run blocker.

Weaknesses: Quickness is lacking getting off the line of scrimmage and out of stance. Doesn’t have great flexibility and has trouble adjusting to difficult throws. Should be a more dominant blocking given his size.
