The Dolphins on Wednesday worked out veteran inside linebacker Brandon Spikes, the former Florida Gators standout who was out of the NFL last season after serving a four-game suspension, Omar Kelly of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports.
Spikes, who is viewed as a run-stuffing specialist, has started 49 games in five seasons with the New England Patriots and Buffalo Bills.
He’s contributed 340 tackles, two sacks and two interceptions during his NFL career, which has been hindered by numerous injuries. Last year, Spikes was suspended for the first four weeks of the regular season for violating the NFL’s conduct policy, but he didn’t get signed by an NFL team.
The Dolphins have depth issues at linebacker, which could become problematic considering the team’s three starters – Koa Misi, Kiko Alonso and Jelani Jenkins – have all struggled to stay healthy the past couple of seasons.
Spikes would be a good addition to this team, as he could add some spice to a linebacker core that looks to get even better for the 3016 season under Adam Gase.
