Miami Dolphins: Philbin Hints Jordan Will Be Ready for Week 1

Dolphins rookie defensive end Dion Jordan has missed the team’s past two exhibition games after re-injuring a surgically repaired right shoulder on August 9 in Jacksonville.

Jordan finally returned to practice on Tuesday, but did so as a limited participant, which means he likely won’t play in the preseason finale on Thursday night. According to reports, there has been a growing concern inside the organization that the third-overall pick in April’s draft won’t be ready for the regular season opener on September 8.

Head coach Joe Philbin was singing a different tune in a conference call with fans on Wednesday night, however, saying, “you’re going to see a lot” of Jordan “in the next couple of weeks.”

Coach Philbin is rarely candid when it comes to the Dolphins’ injured players, but his optimism concerning Jordan seems to be fairly straightforward. At this point, it would be surprise if Jordan isn’t cleared in time for the opener, which is great news for a defense that is in need of another pass-rushing specialist to pair with Cameron Wake.

Expect to primarily see Jordan on third downs during the beginning portion of the season. But the Oregon product is too talented not to eventually push for a starting spot at some point this season, even with Olivier Vernon’s improvement as the first-team right defensive end.
