It appears the Dolphins’ interest in free-agent fullback Vonta Leach was never as high as we originally thought. According to Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald, general manager Jeff Ireland won’t be extending an offer to Leach before training camp.
The Dolphins are apparently interested to see what kind of shape last year’s starting fullback Jorvorski Lane reports to camp in before talking contract with Leach, who is 31.
If Lane impresses at the start of camp, the Dolphins will proceed without Leach.
Of course, it may not matter. Leach likely isn’t going to sit around and wait on the Dolphins and could choose to return to the Ravens, who reportedly have an offer on the table, or sign with a team like the Houston Texans, who have also shown interest.
Leach would have been a quality addition to the offense as one of the best lead blockers in the business. But the Dolphins have obviously made an effort to become a younger football team and aren’t, at least not now, willing to compromise at fullback.
