Third-round pick Dallas Thomas signed his rookie contract with the Dolphins today. Thomas’ four-year deal is said to be worth $2.8 million with a signing bonus of about $600,000.
The University of Tennessee product will start off as Jonathan Martin’s backup at left tackle, but could step in at guard if need be. If Martin pans out protecting Ryan Tannehill’s blindside, Thomas may settle in at left guard in the future.
Current first-team left guard Richie Incognito will be a free agent in 2014 and isn’t exactly an ideal fit in Miami’s zone-blocking scheme. Thomas, on the other hand, is a lighter, more athletic lineman that is a natural fit for the system.
With Thomas now under contract, only first-round selection Dion Jordan remains unsigned for the Dolphins’ 2013 draft class. The new CBA’s rookie wage scale has prevented many rookie holdouts. But negotiations between Jordan and Miami could still hit a snag as the battle for offset language may be a deterrent to getting the third-overall pick in training camp on time.
