Dolphins sign rookies Jenkins, Sturgis, and Jones

Jelani Jenkins goes through drills at Dolphins rookie camp

The Dolphins began the process of getting their nine draft picks under contract today, signing linebacker Jelani Jenkins, kicker Caleb Sturgis, and cornerback Don Jones.

Jelani Jenkins, who was taken in the fourth-round, is expected to be a significant special-teams contributor this season and potentially a starter at outside linebacker in the future. Caleb Sturgis, a fifth-round pick, will compete with Dan Carpenter for the Dolphins’ only roster spot at kicker. And Don Jones, who was taken with Miami’s final pick in the seventh round, is expected to compete at nickel corner but will have an uphill battle attempting to crack the 53-man roster.

The Dolphins have six draft picks remaining that they have yet to come to terms with. Thanks to the NFL’s new rookie wage scale, rookie holdouts are far less frequent than they used to be. But they can still happen, which was evident when Ryan Tannehill sat out the beginning of training camp a year ago. The Dolphins hope to avoid a situation like that with their 2013 draft class this summer.
