Matt Flynn next Tom Brady?

With the 209th pick in the 2008 NFL Draft the Green Bay Packers takes Quarterback Matt Flynn from LSU.  Most People took this pick as the Packers taken a backup at best. With only one year as the full time starter, that ended in injury for Flynn. Who could disagree?  2008 was also the first year as the starter for Aaron Rogers. So the Packers weren’t looking for a starter.

In Flynn’s first three years he had only one start. His stat line red three touchdowns, three interceptions and 497 yards passing. In his fourth year one start but what a start it was. Matt set Packer team records for yards passing in a game with 480 and touchdown passes 6. A game that got Flynn all kind of buzz going into free agency. Spending fours backing up one of the best quarterbacks in the league Flynn learned how to run a tough NFL offense. But more importantly how to prepare for the game. Something too many young players don’t get.

What makes Flynn an attractive option are his measurable 6’2, Good arm strength, mobile, smart.    With the NFL being a quarterback driven league these things are in short supply. Teams in Arizona, Miami, Cleveland and Seattle needing quarterbacks. Flynn has plenty of options.

We will start with where Flynn should not go first. Seattle Pete Carroll has done great job coaching a bad team. But the Seahawks need more than just a quarterback. A big play wide receiver would help Seattle land Flynn. But the chances of getting both are slim. Cleveland has the hots for RG3 in the draft. But unlikely to get RG3Flynn is a good plan B. But just like Seattle no wide outs and no running game this would be crazy. Both teams need too much to make this work out.

The two best places for Matt Flynn. Arizona has maybe the best wide receiver in Larry Fitzgerald the start of a solid running game.  But the negatives offense line needs work, and Peyton Manning is their first choice. Miami has a top ten wide out in Brandon Marshall, but he can be a pain to deal with. Little running game, decent line, new coaching staff.. The Dolphins need more work but is the place Flynn should go. Joe Philbin worked with Flynn in Green Bay and plans to run that offense. So this is an easy pick. Less talent in Miami but the chance to do more with coaches he knows makes this the best move.

As the Packers drafted a little thought of player from a big school to be their backup. In the late rounds of the draft.  He turns out to be a good player who shows he can be a different maker. If this sound likes the Tom Brady story your right. This story just won’t end with all the rings. But this won’t be the Scott Mitchell story either. Given a big contract then doesn’t pan out. Flynn has that desire to be a successful NFL quarterback. If he makes the right move in this off season his dreams of being an NFL star could come true.
