Henne Elected as Captain for First Time in Career

Quarterback Chad Henne has been elected a captain of the Dolphins by his teammates for the first time. The vote this week came after Henne spoke of trying to assume more of a leadership role this season.

“It’s an honor and shows respect from my teammates,” Henne said Friday. “It proves I’ve come a long way. I’m here to lead this team and help them win.”

Henne, a fourth-year pro, was plagued by inconsistency in 2010 and briefly benched. The Dolphins courted Denver quarterback Kyle Orton this summer but decided against making a trade, and Henne will start Monday’s opener against New England.

The other captains will be tackle Jake Long, linebacker Karlos Dansby and safety Yeremiah Bell. Long, who also played with Henne at Michigan, said he was pleased to see the quarterback chosen.

“He has been showing that leadership and has been a rock in our offense,” Long said. “He got voted captain for a reason.”
