Will the Fins Go After Phillip Merling’s Salary?

Mike Berardino of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reports that Dolphins General Manager Jeff Ireland just told him after today’s practice that defensive end Phillip Merling, who was supposed to be the starting defensive end, has was actually placed there on Friday at the start of training camp. The only reason Merling, out for the year with that torn Achilles’ tendon, is on the active list is because you can’t be placed on the reserve/non-football injury list until the regular season begins. So look for that to happen at that time. This means that even though Merling is on an active/NFI injury list, the Dolphins can still go after some or all of that $600,000 he is owed this season. They can do this because his injury took place during a workout away from the team facility.
