Breaking Down the Fins 2009 Salary Cap

ESPN’s Insider section just did a full-scale blowout about the salary cap for each and every team around the league. Here’s what they had to say on the Dolphins:

2009 Salary Cap: $135,835,822
Player with Highest Cap Number: LT Jake Long ($9,606,240; 7.5% of cap)
Highest Cap Number for a Player No Longer with Club: DE Vonnie Holliday ($2,500,000; 2.0% of cap, 20th on club)
Player Who Has to Live Up to Cap Number: LB Reggie Torbor ($3,600,000; 2.8% of cap, 15th on club)

A lot has been made of the free-agent bust that wide receiver (soon-to-be tight end) Ernest Wilford has been to this point in his Dolphins career, but fellow 2008 free agent signee Reggie Torbor has similarly failed to provide any return on the Dolphins’ investment (six total tackles in 2008). Torbor was unable to beat out Akin Ayodele for a starting position in the Dolphins’ linebacker corps, a sign that the Dolphins needed an upgrade at the position. Torbor, who pocketed $4 million guaranteed when he signed in Miami, will feel even more pressure to perform with the return of Jason Taylor to Miami, which makes Miami’s linebacker group even more crowded than it was last year.
