Cameron Wake

Vancouver-Aug. 31- BC Lions Cameron Wake chases down Montreal Alouettes Anthony Calvillo in CFL action Friday night at BC Place Stadium. (Steve Bosch/Vancouver Sun) [PNG Merlin Archive] Would like pix from Lions/Als game…note from cas; we have high speed. File like a newswire service. Montreal will be looking for a feed (because they no longer have cp)

note from cas: update from Mike beamish: short form: we are looking for a shot of Tony Proudfoot and Rick Moffatt in teh broadcast booth

Here is his longer version:

Former B.C. Lion Tony Proudfoot, now the head of the physical education department at Dawson College in Montreal, is suffering from ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease) yet that hasn’t stopped him from broadcasting duties as the colour man on CJAD radio, the voice of the Montreal Alouettes.

Tony’s speech is becoming slurred as the disease progresses. However, his broadcasting partner, play-by-play man Rick Moffat, introduces Tony before every game to inform listeners that his colour man is “not drunk”, as some believed earlier this year, when Tony first went on the air.

Tony has chosen to give his disease a public profile, not because he’s the type of person who craves attention but because he’s hoping to increase awareness of ALS, which strikes about 1,800 Canadians each year. In Toronto, alone, there are 200 labs devoted to cancer research. There are three labs devoted to ALS research in the entire country.

I’m hoping to do a story on Tony next week, when the Lions are in Montreal for their Sept. 9 game against the Alouettes.

Both Tony and Rick Moffat will be in the visiting team broadcast booth tonight at BC Place. I’m hoping our photog can get a shot of them together just before game time, before going down to field level.

Tony is staying over in Vancouver for a few days after the game to visit his father-in-law, who is also ailing.
