Dolphins’ Dominant Defense Stifles Broncos 26-17

The Miami Dolphins in Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos had just a medicore offense, both in the passing and running departments. Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington wasn’t particularly sharp, but he didn’t need to be as the Dolphins bottled up the Broncos running game to the tune of 14 total yards and made Broncos QB Jay Cutler’s life miserable as they defeated the Broncos 26-17 at Denver.

To illustrate how dominant the Dolphins defense was, they scored 13 of their 26 points off of turnovers. What could have been the defining moment of the game was when Cutler apparently hit wide receiver Brandon Marshall with a 77-yard touchdown pass, which would have tied the score; but unfortunately for Cutler and the Broncos, it was called back due to a questionable offensive pass interference call on Marshall as the side judge said that Marshall pushed off Miami cornerback Jason Allen just before grabbing the pass at midfield.

That call was the straw that broke the camel’s back as Cutler would throw an interception on the first play of the fourth quarter, and the Dolphins would take advantage as kicker Dan Carpenter’s 41-yard field goal would put the Dolphins up 19-10 – a lead they would manage to hang on to. Pennington had just a mediocre effort for Miami, going 23-of-40 for 281 yards and an interception while Cutler went 24-of-46 for 307 yards with 2 TD’s and 3 INT’s.

Rushing was not a strong point for either team; Ronnie Brown led the Dolphins rushers with 59 yards on 20 carries and a TD along with 30 receiving yards while Andre Hall led Denver with – and this is not a typo – 7 yards. Greg Camarillo led all Miami receivers with 11 receptions for 111 yards and a TD. Fullback Peyton Hillis led the Broncos receivers with 7 receptions for 116 yards and a score while Eddie Royal added 69 receiving yards and a TD. Miami (4-4) plays again on Sunday when they host the Seattle Seahawks while Denver (4-4) travel to Cleveland to take on the Browns – also on Sunday.
