Running Back Controversy In Miami?

Miami Dolphins running back Ronnie Brown is the center of speculation as of late, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen as it is being rumored that Brown could be possibly be either dealt or released by the team; the rumor started when on ESPN’s “Monday Night Countdown” show during its “Sink Or Swim” segment. To update what happened on that segment, Mortensen was asked about Dolphins running back Ricky Williams. Mortensen stated that the team is so pleased with Williams that he wouldn’t be surprised if Brown plays for another team this season; furthermore, Mortensen said that the reason he thinks that Brown may be leaving Miami is that he is “struggling” this preseason.

This stems from a report from the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero which stated that Mortensen was at the Dolphins’ preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars last Saturday evening in which Mortensen spent some time in a conversation with Dolphins general manager Jeff Ireland. So perhaps the comments from Mortensen during Monday Night Countdown came from Ireland; but to be fair, Ireland may have been thinking out loud, not knowing that Mortensen would report the conversation on the Monday Night Countdown bradcast.

While from all accounts, Williams has had a very good camp while Brown is struggling to some degree – keeping in mind that Brown is wearing a cast on his right hand that goes from halfway up his forearm all the way to his thumb, basically catching passes one-handed – Brown has not in any of his past 3 seasons played in all 16 regular season games per season. But it seems to not make sense just dealing or releasing Brown as he was their #1 pick back in 2005 and we also know that he is very talented when healthy. Whatever the current circumstances may be, this bears watching as the preseason is coming to a close very soon.
