Fins First Pick on the Market Says Ireland

If anyone wants the first pick to this years NFL Draft in April – just call the Miami Dolphins.  Today’s Orlando Sun-Sentinal is reporting that the Dolphins have opened the door to the highest bidder for this April’s #1 pick in the draft.  Jeff Ireland, new Fins GM, said on NFL Network when it came to the first overall pick – “We’re open for business.”  In other words, the Dolphins realize they have a lot of holes to fill, and would like nothing more than to move out of that first pick and stockpile either players or more likely – draft picks.

“Rome wasn’t built in a day, and this won’t be built in a day either,” Ireland said. “The No. 1 pick is no different from the 22nd pick. You’ve got to make the right selection. You just can’t miss on it. We’re going to do everything in our power to make the right choices, whether it be to take the pick or move down. We’ll listen to all offers.”  It is always tough to deal the number one pick, and for the Dolphins, it will not be as easy as it sounds.  No one likes to draft up to the top five, as it costs team usually a ton of money, as well as future draft picks.  It’s not something that you normally see these days around the league.

Everyone remembers the holdout of Raiders pick JaMarcus Russell, who didn’t come in till the second week of September.  He and the team were in a stalemate all summer, to the point where some thought he might miss the whole year.  He didn’t start a game till the last week of the season.  He ended up with a deal with about $31 mil guaranteed, and a six-year deal worth about $60 mil.  Expect an even bigger deal for this years number one – whoever that may be.
