Report: Sparano May be Named Dolphins Coach Today

The Dolphins impending decision to name Cowboys assistant Tony Sparano as their newSparano head coach could come in a press conference as early as today according to the Palm Beach Post. Tuesday new Fins GM Jeff Ireland flew to Dallas to pick up Sparano, and by the end of the night he was having dinner with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga. It seems rather obvious at this point that Sparano is going to get the position, as the team was supposed to talk to Mike Tice Monday, but that meeting never took place.

The report is that Sparano will meet again with Dolphins officials today and there is a good chance by the end of the day there will be an official announcement about the deal as well as a press conference that may take place late today or early Thursday. The 46-year-old Sparano has been touted as the teams new head coach for about the past 2 weeks, and after the Cowboys were upset as the number one seed Sunday by the Giants, it only quickened the process of getting him to Miami sooner.

One big reason that Sparano has been so high on the Dolphins list from day one is his relationship with new Dolphins football operations president Bill Parcells, who worked with Sparano in Dallas. Parcells hired him as the teams tight end coach in 2003, and them moved him to offensive coordinator. Sparano first talked to the Dolphins back on January 5th, and right away seemed to walk out of that meeting ready to take the position.
