Green Gets the Nod as Starting QB Over Lemon

The Dolphins have made it official, as today they named Trent Green as the teams starting quarterback for their season opener vs the Redskins on September 9th.  The move was expected, as Green was not brought in to be a backup, and his battle this past preseason with Cleo Lemon was competitive, but many felt all along that Green was going to be named the starter sooner rather than later.  “We’re at a point where we need to start putting this offense together and the number one thing our offense needs is leadership,” coach Cam Cameron said. “Trent brings that, but I do believe Cleo’s time is coming and he’s got a lot of room for growth.”

Green played better this past week as the Dolphins got past the Chiefs in preseason action.  The first game the team played against the Jaguars in preseason Green and the rest of his first-team teammates looked a bit lost, but this past week rebounded nicely.  “I’m obviously excited about it and looking forward to leading this team and playing up to the level I’ve played in the past,” Green said. “I look forward to having a big season for us.”

The breakdown of the QB position in Miami is not over, as even though Lemon battled with Green, he must also hold off rookie QB Jon Beck for the backup job.  The teams second-round pick is sure to push Lemon throughout the season and hopes to make it at some point as Green’s backup and forcing Lemon into the 3rd QB spot.  “I’m very happy with the role I’ve been given,” Lemon said.  In two preseason games, Lemon was 13-for-17 for 108 yards.
