Dolphins Win 18-17 Despite Green and the Offense’s Slow Start

Green

Not exactly the best of starts for Trent Green and the Dolphins #1 offense in their 18-17 preseason win over the Jags.  Green was less than impresive, and there is much work to be done if Miami is going to make any sort of noise this season in the AFC East.  Green seemed out of sync with the offense, which Cameron did say was less than 40 percent implemented so far.  He played the first half and was just 6-for-15 for 60 yards, and his QB rating was an ugly 24.3.  On top of that, he was sacked twice and fumbled.

Of course the starting offensive line did little to help Green in his cause, and seems like it could be a problem point for the team.  Starting right guard Rex Hadnot, first-time starting right tackle Anthony Alabi, rookie center Samson Satele and rookie left guard Drew Mormino all seemed to get pushed around at points by the Jags.  A possible bright spot was first-round draft pick Ted Ginn Jr., who started and returned the opening kickoff 25 yards, then caught a 9-yard pass from Green. Just like the rest of the team though, he does have aways to go.

Cameron seemed more impressed with backup rookie QB Jon Beck, who led the team on a drive that turned out to be the game-winner.  In the 69-yard drive he was 6-for-9 and had help from backup RB Jesse Chatman, who ran for 88 yards, including a 74-yard TD run.  “It’s nice to see the young guys come out in the second half and find a way to finish the ballgame,” Cameron said. “It’s a positive when you win and can’t get it done on third down [1 of 11].”  Beck also knew that the pressure would be on him to win the game.  “I knew I’d be the last quarterback to go in, and all I was thinking about was getting the ball in the end zone,” Beck said. “I went over to [Cobbs after the game] and said, ‘I’m very grateful.'”

So while the Dolphins get the win, they realize that they still have a lot of work to do.  The team will try and get their starting offense back on track when they travel to KC for a Thursday showdown with the Chiefs.
